FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 9 – 15 is National Prevention Week

Mentor, OH May 3, 2021: Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers is proud to support National Prevention Week (NPW). NPW is an annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness and action around substance use prevention and the promotion of positive mental health. This year, this national initiative, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), will take place May 9 to 15.

National Prevention Week (NPW) is held each year during May. Originally, SAMHSA chose this timing because it is near the start of summer, an important time for school, communities, and prevention professionals to re-focus on prevention. Adolescents and full-time college students most often use substances for the first time during June or July, according to SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The main goals are:
  • Involve communities in raising awareness of substance use and mental health issues and in implementing prevention strategies, and showcasing effectiveness of evidence-based prevention programs;
  • Foster partnerships and collaborations with federal agencies and national organizations dedicated to improving public health; and
  • Promote and disseminate quality substance use prevention and mental health promotion resources and publications.
Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers provides a message of hope and recovery for the community through education programs designed to increase knowledge and understanding about the disease of addiction and options for prevention and recovery. Some of these programs include:
  • Mike Link Driver Intervention Program
  • Drug Free Safety Program
  • Community Coalitions
  • Community Based Tobacco Prevention Programs
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Education
  • Problem Gambling Education
  • Professional Development/Training and Speakers Bureau

We believe prevention is a planned process of approaches and activities specifically designed to preclude the onset of alcohol and other drug use, problem gambling, and other risky behaviors.
