Geauga County Health Equity Initiative
Mentor, OH June 10, 2021: Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers, Chagrin Falls Park Community Center, and Geauga Public Health are teaming up to address health disparities related to health equity and tobacco use. In order to help identify meaningful indicators that assist in achieving health equity, our agencies will be co-facilitating the Geauga County Health Equity Initiative.
The goal of this initiative is to develop a 5‐year strategic plan consisting of a detailed work plan and culturally appropriate objectives. This plan will help to improve health equity in relation to tobacco prevention, cessation, and control in Geauga County.
Strategies include:
- Working with grassroots and civic organizations whose activities and campaigns advance health equity.
- Raise awareness of the inequity including the issue of tobacco, but also the social or structural factors that influence this.
- Increase participation and engagement among member of the affected population to affect change – activities that increase social action to bring light to the issue (i.e., member of a population and partners hold an event that draws media or community‐wide attention to the issue.
- Health promotion efforts may also include organizational, policy, or environmental changes that facilitate positive health outcomes – not only working to change the behavior but changing the environment to make it easier (i.e., smoke‐free or tobacco‐free policies, POS policies that limit access or accessibility)
