Alcohol Awareness Month

ALCOHOL AT WORK

Alcohol is the single most used and abused drug in America.

Nearly 14 million Americans (1 in every 13 adults) abuse alcohol or are alcoholics.

Alcohol is a major factor in injuries, both at home, at work, and on the road.

Absenteeism from work is estimated to be 4 to 8 times greater among alcoholics and alcohol abusers.

Other family members of alcoholics also have greater rates of absenteeism.

Accidents and on-the-job injuries are far more prevalent among alcoholics and alcohol abusers.

Up to 40% of industrial fatalities can be linked to alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation offers the Drug Free Safety Program. It helps employees learn about substance use, abuse and dependency. It helps employers assist and retain valuable employees. It also grants discounts on Workers’ Compensation premiums.

There are many misconceptions about alcohol in the workplace and the more people learn the better. There are few places where adults can learn about substance use, abuse and dependency, so employment-based programs are effective.
